Can I avoid the ridiculous notification influx?

I'm using a Tab S 10.5 SM-T800 on 6.0.1.

I don't use my tablet every day like I do my phone and when I do decide to use the table I get a stream of notifications that feels as if it lasts forever. I don't want to turn notifications completely off but I've yet to find a way to disable this "catch up" that my tablet likes to play. I've left my phone off for a while before and I don't remember it ever doing this. I turned the tablet on today and I'm getting notifications from 7 days ago.

Is it possible to turn this off or do I just have to deal with it?

You can change notifications on an app by app level. Turn them off and check manually...

Have you received any answers? Mine keeps saying Power Connected, Charging.

You can kill all notifications if you so desire. In notifications settings, tap MORE, all apps (or show system apps) and browse through the long list to disable any one.
Then open settings again, find lock screen and security and find notifications on lock screen.... I only have messages and calls notify me silently using the led and vibration. Nothing else.
