Why can't I send text messages as stand alone from gear s

I have a Verizon Gear S and when I'm in stand alone mode (phone off or not in range) I get a message saying sending failed. Why? I have it connected remotely and network is on etc. Is this a stupid missing feature or is my watch defective?

Most likely your watch account on Verizon is not properly configured. You need call Verizon to find out.

Update:

Figured it out. I was replying to my wife. She had sent me messages previously when my phone was on and connected. The reply was trying to 'bounce' the reply off my phone, but my phone was off so it couldn't send. However, when I 'composed' a message to anyone rather than replying, it went through. Actually figure this out while on hold with tech support. Hope this helps someone.

Yes thanks, I have just bought one and I don't plan to use it at all with my phone (even though I have a S4) and was wondering about this problem after seeing it on amazon reviews.
