Cardboard apps not working right

Just got a gear vr and have been trying out the gear apps as well as the vr apps from the play store. I'm really disappointed in the google play apps. My phone keeps on vibrating and pulling down the notification shade and acting weird when using a play store app in the gear headset. The gear vr apps are amazing though. Any tips to get the play store vr apps to work better?

You should not hook up the USB port to the Gear VR. Start the cardboard app and hold the USB plug out of the way, gently, and then snap the Note 4 in place. It has worked just fine for me and others I know.
