Thanks to everyone that has given advice. The issue was actually with the South African network provider. I am not sure of the exact details but the phone is now working perfectly.

Yes is was sold in the UK but I have operated it across multiple networks within the UK.

Thanks Kizzy. I just checked and my old UK network uses 2100 MHz and the SA network uses 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz. So this does not look to be the issue.
