If you can verify that only the screen is broken, see what htc will charge to replace it, add that cost to the $100 for the phone and you'll see if you're "saving" any money

I just got a reply from HTC. I pressed them what should happen if the battery fails after the 12 month mark. They said they do offer a battery replacement service. You'd have to pay them to replace it - but at least you wouldn't have to purchase a whole new phone.
