Can i hook up my sony xperia z as a serial device to my laptop?

OK so I can't get past the lock screen on my Sony xperia z. My USB port on the phone doesn't work but I have a serial to 3.5 cable..that I can have tried to hook it up with..PC doesn't recognize it of course..I read the phone needs to have special drivers for the PC to see it. I have tried hard reset and I can't get into the recovery menu, it just loads into safe mode
