Hey everyone!

So I got a Sony xperia z1 not too long ago (came from a blackberry z10) and I'm having a problem playing music wirelessly through my car. I have a 2013 ford escape SEL, and I can connect the phone via Bluetooth no problem, but when I play music it only plays through the phone speakers and not the car speakers. Any advice?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you sure your car stereo can stream Bluetooth audio? On your phone, go to Settings>Bluetooth, select the car device, and see if there is a "Media Audio" checkbox. If not, and you only see "Phone Audio," then your car stereo doesn't support streaming Bluetooth audio.

Both of those were checked, and I was able to stream music from my z10, not sure why it won't work with my z1

I suspect you have done this but, did you check the volume on the phone? My Z1s had different sound profiles for different modes, for example phone, versus headphones, versus Bluetooth. Sometimes I would get into my car and experience what you are experiencing and it was because the volume was set too low.

BTW.....I liked my Z1s so much I just upgraded to a Z3. Good luck!

Good thought, but the OP said the sound plays through the phone speaker, not the car speakers.

What happens if you uncheck Media Audio, then check it on again?

Ooops...missed that part. Thanks for the kind correction.

OP, what music app are you using when you try to stream? I've got a Bluetooth Alpine head in my car, using Poweramp and once in awhile I would have the same situation as you; phone appears to be paired and sound comes through the handset. Here is what I would do:

Pause or stop the music
Cycle through the inputs or just go to tuner
Go back to Bluetooth input
Wait a couple of seconds
Restart the music

These steps seem to correct the issue.....not sure why.

I'm using the Walkman music player all that came with the phone, but I have the same problem with the google music player app. And at first I thought it might be the volume but even turned all the way up it didn't do anything

Well....even though I'm using a Z3 now, I checked to see if I could stream music via Bluetooth through the head unit in my car using the stock Walkman app. The good news for me was that I was able to do so, the bad news for you was that I was able to do so.....sorry.

Have you contacted your Ford dealership to see if there might be a firmware update for your in-dash entertainment unit? You stated that your Ford is a 2013 which means it could have been manufactured as early as 2012. There's been a lot of changes to Android and Bluetooth stacks in the last 2 years.
