Cannot start my Sony Z5 phone because of the google account?

I have a sony Z5. Today I did a system update and the phone said that there was an error with the update and that I had to reset the factory settings. I did this and now I have to log into my google account before I can do anything with the phone. Every time I try to log in it gives me a message that says "please log in with the owners details for this device" I have checked my details and they are correct but it still wont let me log in. Can anybody give me advise?

Is it possible that the phone had been used by someone before you acquired it?
