Exchange Contacts Merged

I use MS Exchange.
When I add the account to my phone the phone merges similar contacts into one yet they remain separate on my laptop.
How can I prevent this automatic merge from happening or undo it afterwards?
The contacts do NOT have identical names, sometime just the same first name.

Go into the merged contact in question.

Scroll down to where it says "Linked Contacts" and indicates the sources of the contacts.

Click on the black backgrounded area (white foreground text saying "x linked contacts").

Click on one of the red "-" signs and it will unlink the contacts.

(On the off chance that you have contacts that are not linking properly, there's an "Add linked contact" there)
