Hi folks! I'm Deborah, had my Epic 4G for almost a year, generally loving it, until Gingerbread turned my beloved phone into a nightmare (will post separately). My first smartphone was a Handspring with phone module loaded into the back.

Hello everyone! I'm Roberto and I've been using the Epic 4G on Spring since November 2010. I installed a pre rooted ROM this past Spring and don't ever want to go back, but I'm a bit of a newbie and need some help with the recent Gingerbread update. I've posted a thread with my question here:

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi everyone, my name's Jehan and I've been using my Epic since the day it came out, so about 15 months! And, I've been (silently) browsing AC forums for about a year, and you guys definitely got me through some of my early problems/fears with rooting, etc, so thanks for that!

Anyway, I'm *somewhat* competent now and decided to pay the community back by answering any questions I can. Oh, and I'm in London for the month, so if I respond in the middle of the night, it's not cause I'm some crazy insomniac. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Lol.

    Greets.

My name is Brett. I have had this phone for 8 or 9 months. I am a geek by trade, so I can be a little impatient when it comes to screwing with things on my own time. I like the phone. I like it better since GB. I play music on the side, so i use youtube and music player alot to learn songs. I don't really play games. I do notice that my eyesight is getting much worse since I got this phone.

Intro'ing myself here... just joined last week. I'm a long-time smartphone user (12+ years), had the first smartphone with a mono screen when it first came out eons ago (Kyocera QCP 6035). But since 2004 I've been a happy Treo user and was a member of a great community, mytreo.net.

I have had my Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G for about 8 months. I call it my "stupidphone" b/c it is completely hopeless when used as a phone. It's a great handheld computer, but a truly lousy phone/pda. The battery life SUCKS like nothing I've ever seen before. I have to keep it plugged in all day to be able to use it at night. I use it for everything and I still miss my trusty Treo.

I have to reboot to hear anything. The phone has to be rebooted whenever I need to hear a voice-mail or watch a video or listen to music or want to use a ringtone that didn't come w the phone. Often the sound on games - and I play alot of games - will just go out completely during a game. I find I have to reboot the phone a few times daily for it to actually work right when I need it. Sometimes it just crashes and turns itself off for no reason at all. Sometimes it just crashes and freezes the screen so I have to wait until the battery drains before I can reboot - which isn't that much of an issue considering how lousy the battery life is.

When I upgraded my OS on Nov 17 to GB I lost access to automatically updating gmail, and I have about 10+ gmail addys I read on my phone. I had to uninstall a few apps & then upgrade the gmail app to finally have it working right again. I haven't tried every app since the upgrade that I've got installed b/c there's a ton of them. So it's possible I have other apps not working as well since the OS upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, the phone looks smart and I love how the games look, but when used as a phone, for business, for contacts, notes, memos, etc, it really sucks bigtime. I downloaded a great free program called Evernote to deal with those lacks. I loathe that it doesn't allow me to set my own ringtones for different types of calls (unknown caller, specific people ringtones, etc), or allow me to view all my apps in list mode instead of the default icon-only mode that takes up so much more space. This phone is clearly a work in progress that shouldn't have been released until they ironed all the kinks out of it.

I really have a love/hate relationship with the thing. I'm so tired of that, I loved my trusty Treo and would love to be using an updated version of that instead.

You really sound like you either have a faulty phone (consider taking it into Sprint and have them check it and possibly exchange it) or a bad flash of whatever version of Android you're running, cause your phone sounds like it's not working anywhere near as well as it should be. Out of interest, what ROM/kernel are you running?

As for the Gmail update issue, that was a problem with the Gmail app that has since been resolved. Anyway, I think that once you reflash your phone with an updated ROM, you should have a better experience. Good luck!

hey jmuru... thanks for the suggestion. I've been dreading taking the phone back to Best Buy where I bought it b/c it usually ends up taking hours there... but now, after reading yr comment, I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and take a trip to BB.

hey there, introducing ourselves, wifey and i are new android converts from webOS, and i must say webOS runs circles around android, but we jumped ship b/c no more webOS phones and the hardware wasnt good. plus we were able to get a epic and epic 4g touch for a whopping $150, cant beat that with a stick. Anyway we're gonna make the best of this altho we're already missing the small stuff like having a specific ringtone for those not in my address book, so if im away from the phone i can hear if it someone i know or not. if anyone has a idea of how to do this please post it, we'd really appreciate it.

Hi! Just joined the site today. I got my Epic in Nov. '10 and have to say it's such an amazing step up from any other phone I've used (came from an Instinct and a flip before that). I really can't believe it's taken me this long to get on to an Android enthusiast website and finally decide to see what I can really do with this phone. I think it must have to do with the fact that my line is currently connected on a Nexus S that I didn't realize was a step down from an Epic and so my Epic is free to be toyed with 'til I swap my line back (selling the Nexus S, anyone interested?).

Glad to have you on board....

FYI, if you do decide to sell your Nexus S it must be done in the Marketplace here at AC

hello. my name is Jayson and im having a problem with my Sprint samsung epic 4g. its from the Galaxy S line and i got it from a friend. it had a pattern lock and i was trying to unlock it when the Android system recovery popped up. all i know is that the model number is: SPH-D700 I DONT KNOW IF THAT HELPS AT ALL OR NOT.
heres what i keep seeing and keep running into:

    Android system recovery <3e>

Enter: OK Key. Select : Vol Up / Vol Down
    reboot system now
    apply update from sdcard
    wipe data/factory reset
    wipe cache partition

    # MANUAL MODE #

i tried everything to reset the phone to its factory defaults but nothing happens. i have even tried pressing every button and it seems to have froze with the exception it the 4 front panel buttons: menu, home, go back, and search with nothing happening but the button flashing one time after each press. i have also tried holding the power button, camera and vol up to get to the recovery screen but after that the vol up and vol down buttons are the onlt things that seem to work. i tried scrolling down to wipe data/factory reset and pressing the home button but nothing happens, i press all the other buttons and still i get the same result as before. please help me! i dont know what im doing wrong......

please help me!i dont know what it was using for an os and i dont know what software it uses.
please, if you can help me to do this i would most appreciate it.

    THANK YOU!

also im having to use my sprint incogneto as a medium to transfer data.

Hi, I'm Jeff. I have the epic and I LOVE IT, even though I've only had it for 2 weeks, but the battery is working really well (2 days when I don't have to make long calls, or if I'm only texting). Also, I had a quick question:

I came from a curve that let my alarms turn the phone back on in the morning if I turned it off at night. Is there a way to do this on my droid?

Also, I have the basic twitter widget that came with my phone, but I can't seem to tag anyone (as in, there isn't a drop down list for me to click on my followers' names). Does anyone know how to do this or is anybody using a better twitter app?

    Thanks for any help!

Welcome to Android Central and congrats on your Epic Touch.

You however posted in the Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4g forums, common mistake given Samsung using similar names between the new and older Epic's. I'll move your intro post over to the proper forum.

Sprint Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

    Welcome and enjoy

It's been a great experience with my first Android phone in the Epic 4G. Great phone overall IMO but made better with all of the great people in this forum, Paul627g especially.

Last week I decided the new Nexus was for me and I will say that if you're running CM9 on your Epic you are getting a pretty damn good Android ICS experience based on what the Nexus offers.

As for the Nexus I am very happy, I was going to get the Evo 4G LTE cause the better processor and camera but my Epic started acting stupid, I got tired of it and the Nexus happened to just come out.

Really it was the phone I wanted all along until the Evo was announced. I was still in a toss up between the 2 devices as they both offer things that are good over the other. Either way I don't think you can go wrong. The new Nexus is Android how I've come to like it because of the Cyanogenmod team. Touchwiz had some nice things on my Epic but I never missed anything when I went to CM7 and the CM9. I've never used sense so I don't know what I'm missing or gaining but I've found pure Android can be setup however you like with the Play Store and purchasing the apps you actually want and not being stuck with what you don't.

I've found the camera to be good, probably better than the Epic which I thought was acceptable for most any need as a camera phone. The no lag shutter is cool as it takes pics much faster than before. I'm not really sure why a lot of people dislike the Nexus camera, maybe it was a Verizon 4.02 rom issue. Or maybe my expectations are lower than most.

I think I'm staying away from the hacking on this phone too. Everything works just how I want and I know from my Epic, hacking it means sometimes things just don't work. To be fair sometimes Sprint / Samsung were the ones to break something too like GPS connections.

I hope all of you get all you can out of your Epics before you upgrade. If you're waiting for a slider I hope a GS3 version comes out for ya. If you're thinking Nexus the larger screen is really good for typing and I'm not missing the slider portion at all.
