Amount of Users That Hack Their Phones
im curious if anyone has came across a poll or anything that shows the percentage of smart phone users that "hack" their phones. Root, custom roms, etc....

Interesting Topic - I'm curious about that too.

im also curious as a whole...like evo owners, DINC owners...etc...
maybe we can get this in the front page to get a more general consensus. I am only curious about this b/c of the moto comment yesterday about them saying go elsewhere. Which yes they have corrected but im curious what kind of percentage that would actually beLast edited by kgbcapthowdy; 01-20-2011 at 09:12 AM.

I think you could extrapolate the data you get here to get a good idea of the Android community as a whole. - 01-20-2011, 09:12 AM #6

still voids warranty if you dont flash back. but either way the terminology doesnt matter. same point get across either way. Plus hacking sounds way cooler and makes me feel more badass.

With the craptastic service from Sprint and Samsung, this poll will probably be heavily skewed towards the rooting crowd.
Still living strong with the Epic. Picked up a Photon for overseas travel. Can also save you at least 10% on ProClip vehicle mounts and cradles. Feel free to PM me for more info. - 01-20-2011, 10:41 AM #11
Just to make it known, I voted. "Done it all... " I know there is no hope for me.. LOL

Just last night I converted my stock Epic (android 2.1) to the TrulyEpic Rebirth ROM. So, I guess I'd have to say, done it all, but I consider myself more of a modder than a hacker. (I've only just started on my debaucherous exploit journey in the world of Android, so "done it all" really isn't an exact fit for me.)
I don't consider myself a hacker by using available methods/programs (Odin, ClockWork, available ROMs, guides, etc) to apply the hacks any more than I consider myself a programmer by installing an app. To me, the real hackers are the ones diving into the code and creating these abilities for me.
*Which reminds me, I need to go thank the TrulyEpic developer. - 01-20-2011, 11:58 AM #13
I was going to make a post about my rooting experience- but who cares really? I was waiting for a froyo build with little drama- meaning everything had to work. Midnight was my 1st consideration- but when Ragnarokx and Paul had Truly Epic with 1.5 theme and they were driving it from the board here rather than XDA- I was sold.
I'm a mac user and LITERALLY bought a PC laptop for the express reason of easy rooting my Epic. (I'll return it to costco I'm sure- can't stand the model I had to buy LOL!) Now my wife is jealous of my zippy OS and WORKING GPS she may let me root her soon! Her Epic that is. - 01-20-2011, 12:11 PM #14
According to Wikipedia:
That's basically the definition of rooting - gaining super user access and having full administrative control of your phone. No illegalities neededHacking - In common usage, a hacker is a person who breaks into computers, usually by gaining access to administrative controls.

I think that it's incredibly doubtful that you could extrapolate data from a tech forum to the whole Android community, which is rapidly starting to represent the cellphone community as a whole. Most people I know would never even think about going to a forum to find out how to do anything, they'd be more likely to ask me, and those people would also be much less likely to even know what rooting is, let alone want to do it!
There might be some skew relative to users of other carriers/phones within Androidcentral, but I think the much larger skew would come relative to non-Androidcentral like I said above

Poor choice of wording on my part - I meant the AndroidCentral community

Done it all with every Android device I've owned. Although sometimes I prefer to keep things stock, I can't resist temptation at times to play around with things ever now and then.

Woah woah settle down! I did use the word "imply" in the original post but I didn't mean it as an accusation.
Although with the coverage of hacking iOS and the 90's blockbuster hit "Hackers" the general public might view what you do as legal grey area.
P.s. this a non serious joking reply. - 01-20-2011, 09:25 PM
