Email only manually synching despite settings

My new note 2 only receives new emails when I open the email app despite the settings I have set (every 15 minutes). Very frustrating and defeats one of the primary reasons for having a smartphone. One is aol based and the other is a work email. Imap settings. Anybody else run into this?

I've noticed that my emails have not been updating since the first few days myself.. I must have changed something, is what I'm thinking.

I noticed that a google or gmail update introduced a synch option for gmail in addition to all the other email settings. Once I selected the new option my email was ok. Had 2 do the same with my old samsung running GB.
