This might sound stupid but I cannot figure it out for the life of me. There was an update for gmail yesterday or 2 days ago that allows you to delete from the notification which is great and it appeared automatically on my big note 10.1 but on my note 2 it just says 'archive' I checked the settings on both devices and they appear to be the same. Am I just missing something? Thank you!:-\

1. Gmail general settings
2. Swiping conversation list
3. Set to always delete.

You should now have the option to delete instead of archive.

What exactly does the archive do and where does it go?

Sent from the Beast that is Galaxy Note 2

It goes to the folder "all mail".

Changing to delete is not a reasonable alternative. There should be three options: mark as read, delete or reply.

Sent from my totally awesome Sprint Galaxy Nexus, even if I don't know all its secrets yet.
