How to Increase Sprint Epic 4G Touch 3G & 4G Data Speeds

I have tested download speeds at a number of locations using different towers now. In a dead spot near my home I averaged only 87kbps. Now it averages 202kbps. My office is an all metal building where I can only get 4 bars. Without the tweak it averaged 1006kbps. Now 3G averages 1669kbps.

With the Epic 4G and EVO 4G we found that this worked for about 90+%. Try it and see if it works for you. If not, just go back to your original settings that I listed in the opening post.

For 90%, the 3G Fairy will be very kind to you.

Update:

Added a test showing from start to finish of times/locations:

Top 4 tests are here at work 8am,9am~ times. The funny thing is the lowest speed 130kbps was outdoors, the rest were indoors.

The one at 6:50am 1584kbps on the I-17 in Phoenix. (Fastest I've ever had with sprint, Ever.)

1290kpbs was at 1am last night at my home (on 3 bars of service!)

843 was as well on a LA server, not phoenix.

This didn't help my speeds unfortunately, although I really didn't have much to complain about. I averaged 650kbps down before, and 648kbps down after here at my office. Ah well, I'll probably keep the settings in case I need data when I'm out and about in a weak area. Maybe it will help in those circumstances.

every time I type in ril, the "i" changed to upper case when I hit the "l" key...anyone else seeing this?

can't get msl#. when typing "getprop ril.MSL" the "i" in ril gets capitalized

I'm in the same boat, I've tried to change the keyboard settings to stop it from using auto-caps but no luck. Every time the "i" is pressed it changes to "I" (capitalized).

Any ideas out there?

Guys, its SWYPE.

Exit from the program, switch to Samsung keyboard.

Then do all of his steps.

Annoying but temporary.

Just open something like a text msg, long press in the white box where it types. Select Input Method. Select Samsung keyboard, hit ok.

Do the same reverse the change.

what i do to prevent auto capitalization of "i" is change the language from english to spanish. might not be the fastest thing to do but it works.

Tried this and noticed a ~2.5Mbps improvement on 4G downloads. Upload rate is unchanged.

Thanks, I added a note in the opening post. One of the many reason I don't use Swype...

changing keyboards did allow me to type the lower case i to get the msl#. speeds seem a slight bit better but will test it out more

Unfortunately it didn't work for me. I cant really complain. I was getting between 1.5 and 2 down. After I changed it it dropped down to 1 down. I put it back to default and it went back up to closer to 2. Maybe it only works if you are having slow connection speeds to begin with? I am glad it seems to be working for other people though.

Quick question, once you adjust the settings, do you have to keep ConnectBot in order to maintain consistent performance?

Nope, it saves it to the phone. The program ConnectBot is just a access to get your MSL code.

How can you guys be sure that this works when Sprint's data is so inconsistent?

For example, I just got these two results in the span of 30 seconds:

6:37PM: 160kbps
6:38PM: 1234kbps

Seriously considering the AT&T version. I just hate to downgrade in screen size.

Question: Does your msl change if you lets say hard reset the phone or if you flash different ROM, or is it hardware dependent only?

Your MSL code is specific to your handset and doesn't change.

this didn't help my 3G signal as I was getting 200kbps before and after the change. But I don't recall ever getting 12Mbps for 4G....usually 5 to 8

I've tried everything to get connectbot to work and all I get is a small $_and a black screen.

Any suggestions? I know I have typed getprop ril.MSL correctly

I will say that during peak periods, sprint 3g is still absolute suck.

Nothing you can do on the phone can change that. Its off peak times that this helped for me.

I've done about 30 speed tests today, starting around 6am till now 6pm. Gradually went from awesome to outright FAIL around 4pm

Right now 5:37pm - 30-100kbps max

Off peak it helped a ton.
