can I usb tether for free

Hello just got a Epic Touch last month and getting a tablet for X mas. I have never tethered or used my phone as a mobile hot spot. My question is if I connect via the usb cable would the connection be free or would I have to pay for the data; also the phone is unlimited data would the tablet be unlimited too as long as it's attached by the usb cable? Sorry for the newbie questions

as far as i know your phone has to be rooted to take advantage of free tethering and also the tablet is a definite no but hopefully someone else replies to confirm this.

Thanks for the reply... I thhik eventually I will like to root, but right now just want to get used to the phone. I am still waiting on the OTA update. Has it hit the midwest yet? Thanks

EasyTether doesn't require root, and it still shows up in the Market. It is only for USB though. If you want to tether via Bluetooth you need PDAnet, but Sprint is blocking that in the Market. If you want Wifi tether, you need root.
