Is 4G and LTE different? I live in DC and Sprint does have 4G here. Is it an automatic function done by the phone?

Yes, 4G LTE is a newer and much improved technology over WiMax. It hasn't started rolling out yet but you're lucky, it looks like DC is slated for a late August launch. Hang in there, it will be worth the wait.

You're phone is set to receive LTE by default so once it goes live you should be good to go. Some people have been turning it off in the meantime to save battery but I'm not sure how much of a savings that is.

Like the other posters said, there is no 4g-WiMax like older phones, but LTE will be coming to DC in the next several months, possibly next month, but, you have to go into your settings to turn your LTE on. Go under Mobile Networks. There are two options, CDMA+ LTE and CDMA only, so check the one you need, obviously with not LTE, you will want to keep that off, but every now and then cut it on and you might get lucky and get them testing LTE for a day or 2.
