Is your router put out 5ghz? I know mine doesn't. Have you tried automatic?

Check your routers 5ghz security type , make sure it matches the phone, maybe one is aes and the other is tkip, IIRC

I figured it out. For some reason it had 2 diff passwords. I found out that this phone can connect to it with WPS.

I wonder if this might explain some of the problem I have. When I’m in my house, I can connect my S3 to my wireless network just fine. If I go out in my backyard, which is only about 25” away from my N-router, my connection gets really slow. I don’t remember having this problem with my Evo 4G.

5GHZ bands don't broadcast the same distance that 2.4GHZ bands do...so you'll get good signal with 5ghz when you're closer to the router. As you get further away from it, the signal will degrade rapidly, and you'll lose more and more. 2.4ghz doesn't degrade as badly and will go further/through more walls.
