The calendar icon is just an icon that allows you to enter the calendar app. It does not change dynamically with the change of the day.

Umm are you sure because I contacted samsung customer service via chat and they walked me through some steps to try and fix it like soft reset, clearing the calender storage cache and data and none of that worked eventually she told me to do a hard reset which was annoying bc I just got all my stuff on here from itunes and ical. She said if a hard reset didn't work then I would have to take it back to the store.
Also my calendar is not syncing with my Gmail calender. All of this is very frustrating coming from an apple and never experiencing anything like this.
I just got the phone Saturday!

If you're talking about the green calendar icon with 31. That is an app shortcut NOT a widget. It will not update. Your explanation probably confused the tech.

If you are using the touchwiz launcher. Make sure you look in the widget drawer and not the app drawer by selecting the widget tab on top.

Ok got it! when I moved the widget it updated to the right date. Do you have any idea why my calender won't sync with my Gmail?

I have a LG G3. The little desktop Google calendar icon was consistently displaying one day behind the actual date. Yet the actual calendar was correct and stayed synced. If this matches your issue, try the following:
Move the desktop calendar icon to the trash bin [do not uninstall the app].
Now go to your list of apps, find the calendar app and place the icon back on your desktop.
You should now have the correct day and date and it should stay current. [It worked for me.]

I have a LG L4. I have this exact issue. However, the calendar app in the list of apps also shows the same date. Therefore placing the icon back on your desktop does not fix it, for me.

Restarting the phone fixed it, but hope it's not a temporary fix.

My Calendar icon does this too. Restarting the phone fixes it temporarily. I restarted on Saturday, and it's Monday the 18th now, but the icon still says Saturday 16. This is annoying. I don't need a reminder of the day I last restarted my phone, I don't think... lol. It would be somewhat less annoying if it didn't even seem to make an attempt at showing a real date. But since it does seem to be trying, I think it should work consistently, not just for the rest of the day I last restarted my device.

Hoping someone finds a more permanent solution than restarting a device every morning or midnight just to get the date right.

Edit... I just tried changing the Theme I was using (MIUI Dark) and the new theme just had a '31' icon. When I switched back to MIUI, the calendar icon updated. So a complete restart is not needed, just a complete resetting of the theme settings apparently (it didn't remember my selected backgrounds, reverted to default)
