Tethering Help

Hey guys..I need some help on tethering for a road trip. I previously had an EVO and rooted all the time to get tethering with custom ROM's. Since coming back to Android, I've tried tethering with the Bluetooth option on the S3, everything connected, but no data connection. Can anyone confirm if the Bluetooth option works, should I root to tether, or are there any free options to avoid rooting?

If you are rooted and still on ics you can use WiFi tether using WiFi tether app from the playstore. But as soon as you update to jellybean, that will no longer work.
