Title says it all. Getting a system update notification and would like to update but I'm not entirely sure how to do it and keep root. I'm running stock

Sent from my Rooted Galaxy S3

How do I find out what I'm updated to? In the about phone in settings?

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Android Central Forums

If you're rooted you DO NOT NEED TO be on MA6 to go to MB1. Just follow the steps in post 2 of the MB1 thread linked above. That loads a complete, stock but rooted, ROM. It will upgrade you to MB1, which is the latest, regardless of what version you're on now.

If you're already on Jelly Bean (4.1) you can skip the Factory reset step, doing what's called a "dirty flash." Worst case, if you run into problems after the upgrade, you can do the factory reset then. You can see what version you're on now by going to Settings, scroll all the way down, and tap on About phone.

You're on it!

I was going to suggest that some superuser apps have a temporary unroot. If the OP does that then accepts the OTA update, that may work.

hello again
i am trying to update as well. at this point i dont care if i update the phone, i just want the popup to go away. I am running a stock rom, sprint service, and have cwm installed.
i tried to update so it would fail and stop asking me to update. instead, the phone restarted, did its thing and finally went into cwm and i got lost from there... so i just rebooted it. (it never said fail) after the restart, it displays that i have android version 4.1.2, baseband ending in mb1, and build ending in mb1. I thought the updates made the phone go to these, but it is still asking for me to do an update. i still have root as well.
where do i go from here? i dont really care if i get the update, i just want the popup to stop. if i have to update then that is all fine and dandy. if that is the case, if i follow the steps in post 2 of the MB1 thread linked above, will it still work on my phone?
what does wiping davlik and cache do?
Thanks for the help in advance.

also, any opinion on the technique by the guy at How to Update Rooted Samsung Galaxy Devices (Galaxy S4, Note 2, S3, S2, Note, Nexus & More) - YouTube. if i am not allowed to post sites of others, please delete this reply... i am not trying to **** off anybody. just trying to find the easiest way.... before i throw my phone against the wall

If you still have root and CWM, post #2 in this thread should work fine: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/272331-your-way-update-md4.html

The update that Sprint is trying to apply is a newer version of 4.1.2, and is known as MD4 (rather than MB1). Cache is temporary storage where apps put non-permanent status and working data. The apps will recreate this as necessary next time to start them. Dalvik is a little more complicate to explain but, again, when you first restart your phone after applying the update it will all get rebuilt. That's why the first boot takes so long. Here's an article on what Dalvik is all about:

You'll only lose real data if you do a factory reset. That shouldn't be necessary for upgrading from MB1 to MD4.
