Coverage lost but still have working 3G

Never seen this before but was wondering what is going on, happens only in few classes I have during the day. Was tethering my friend and noticed I lost all bars and had a no service icon showing up but internet browsing was just fine for him

I've seen it a time or two. Usually don't have phone signal but still have a data connection.
