New Sleep mode timer under power settings?

After updating my Sprint HTC one to kitkat I found this option when tappedbon sleep mode. Can anyone tell me how these new options work because the 3g/4g connection seems to stay on even know the timer is set.

If you use the set times for on/off, make sure the "learn automatically" is unchecked.
are you trying to turn off data during specific times?

I'm trying to make it so it turns off as soon as the screen turns off

This is probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway...

This setting only shuts off the data, right? Not the phone connection?

Only data is turned off (cell or wifi).... However, this won't happen immediately when the screen is turned off... (except you specify the time to turn off and to turn on). The idea is that if you use the automatic setting, the phone will start learning the periods of inactivity (long periods of sleep mode) and turn data off to conserve power., But if you do not set the timer, as soon as you turn your screen on, data will connect as it comes out of sleep mode...
.. this is how I understand it ....
