Does google video chat work on 3g/4g as well as wifi?
It works over my home wifi but not working other wise.

Yes it does work. As long as you have a data connection it works. Usually home wifi is more stable than data connection when out of wifi range

For some reason I can't get my nexus or my wife's to work on a data connection , just wifi. I have a good single in my home. Can stream video no problem.... No 4g in my area.

For the data connection it wonky has to be "stable" meaning all bars or something. I just use it on wifi and if needed you could use one phone as a wifi hotspot and try it through that way if you both together.
