I am starting my new phone research, my next phone will not be a free one. I am saving up for a top of the line one. Wonder what will be out around then. The Optimus was a great phone to start with.

sent from my CM7/Reborn w/ 1 Gb internal storage Optimus S

Always happy to help, hit that thanks button if I did

November is really far off. The only phones announced for Sprint officially have been the Galaxy Nexus and the LG Viper. The LG Viper is a decent phone but the high end will be the Nexus.

Rumored however is the Galaxy Note as the Galaxy Journal. It's basically a 5" version of the Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch that's slightly faster.

The thing is these phones will be released WAY before November and you'll probably be expecting Quad Core phones by November.

I sorta feel the best bang for your buck is a Nexus phone. At least then you're guaranteed the latest android versions through the life of the phone. The Nexus One won't get ICS but that phone is getting really old.

Even then, the Nexus is more open and easier to compile an AOSP build or even Cyanogen. The exception may be with CDMA however as the dialer apk requires carrier intervention due to the nature of CDMA being a proprietary standard vs GSM which is a more open standard.

Regardless a Nexus device will have an optimized android build from Google reflecting the latest version of Android more reliably and faster then any other phone. Hardware wise they stack up pretty closely with modern phones but the added benefit of updates adds a ton of weight for a Nexus imo.

duffkitty, you make some good points about software releases and support. LG screwed up in their support of the Optimus S, because while I love it, I do not care to purchase another LG handset in the future. A Nexus device would certainly win where software and openness come in.

Hardware is a different story. I have not played with the new Nexus device, but I have played with some of the Samsung products. Awesome interface, beautiful screens... they've got it. But when I hold that gorgeous SGS2E4GT in my hand, it feels like a dare to see how long I can keep it before it breaks in half like a thin piece of chocolate. Think eggs and Home Ec classes -- my life would take that little egg to shop class. Looking at the construction, I don't think the Nexus is that much tougher an egg.

So the question comes to--as a composite product: What will be a solidly built device that gets good software release support?

I have my issues with HTC (security debacle), but most of their products are aluminum bodies with Gorilla Glass. That's tough to beat. And they do make too many freakin' devices, so it's always a mystery. If you buy one of their upper tier devices, you get great software support with it. Just look at the Evo! I'm not totally sold, but I'm leaning toward them.

Finally, there is the 4G issue. Networks are a funny thing, really. WiMAX is available in my area, but LTE is undoubtedly the future of 4G. We'll see what happens this year, but I don't expect any quick miracles here. Given that I would be purchasing a device to last 2+ years, it would be nice to see LTE support included in the new device.

Edit: side note
I would also like a device where I could buy a decent case. I'm getting tired of not being able to find an Otterbox for my Optimus, even though it is a very popular model. Most top shelf phones seem to get a better variety.
BTW, who do I have to smack to stop the production of 70% of the case market going to the lousy iPhone?? Does China think we are are that ga-ga over it?

I believe the Nexus has Gorilla glass or something close. I got my wife a Epic 4G Touch and she loves it, I on the other hand love bleeding edge software.

Both phones should have an Otterbox, they're popular but I admit those HTC phones are built like the old Nokias. My hero was flung across the room and still works. I'm sure A LTE HTC phone will make it by November, possibly their quad core.

Thanks, Mav. I prefer to buy locally when I can. All the places around here I have checked don't carry them for our Opti. Now if I had an Evo, I could pick my color. And I swear iPhoneys have a rack with the names detailed into them, like Christmas ornaments. Would you like sparkles with that? What color would you like your sparkles to be?

Alright, I'm done ranting. I'll just go pick up another $10 snap-on case and see how long it lasts. Hopefully, my next device will get more respect.

I understand.
I also was unable to find any cases that I could put my hands on so I used that eBay link to get my OtterBox. I recommend it.

What I figure is that, with slight differences, the iPhones are all the same so it is easy to keep those cases in stock.
With so many different Android phones, they have limits on what they can carry so they keep the most recently released phone's cases available.
Even this OtterBox will not fit the Optimus M or T so it is hard to find one to put your hands on.
