You can't add another account into Gmail, but you can add multiple accounts, including Gmail, into the native email app, or other apps like MailDroid.

Re: Gmail app
Did you just duplicate your gmail account from the gmail mail app to the general mail account and then just turn off notifications from the gmail mail app?
I tried to delete the account from the gmail mail app and was notified that the account could only be deleted by resetting the phone to factory default.
Is there no conflict or duplicate action by having the gmail account in both apps if you turn of notifications in the gmail app? - 11-16-2011, 07:23 PM #6Thanked by 2:

Re: Gmail app
You can't delete the account that's true. However, if you go into 'Accounts' (not the Gmail App), tap on the account, then you can turn off 'Sync Gmail' and then it won't retrieve that email anymore.
Then K-9 can just do it so you don't have them being stored twice.Last edited by dorelse; 11-16-2011 at 08:08 PM.

Re: Gmail app
This is what I've done, too. I also removed the Gmail app from all the usual places where I look for apps. The phone knows about it, but for all practical purposes, I don't.
I don't really use my gmail account, so I set it to sync only manually in K9 and I don't even remember what I told the Gmail app. - 11-16-2011, 09:55 PM #10

I don't think so. I think the sms clients all use sms APIs in the device to read write the data that the device takes care of sending and receiving. Handcent (et al) just read / write the end results.
I say this because if I send a single sms via handcent, that same sent sms shows up in all other text messaging apps. This suggests that handcent is just writing to some central db. Rather than doing the sending and receiving.
But I'm just speculating.
