turn off notif's not messages

I need to know how to turn off all these annoying beeps and knocks, Ive tried notification alerts on and off but it silences my messages. Please help. Also , can I give my emails and other notifications a different sound than my text messages? galaxy note3

Yes you can. The main notification options found in the settings of your device is for universal notifications across the device. You can then tailor most of your other application sounds through the app itself by going into the settings option inside the app you wish to change the notification sound for. Usually an app defaults to whatever sound it is you made it in your regular settings, but you can then change it to have a different sound for the app. You can even set the notification to silent.

I found it was easier to set my default notification to silent and then add sounds to the ones I cared about hearing.
