Welcome to the forums.
Since you would have to get Sprint to unlock the phone for you, they may not do it until the condition that made it a bad ESN is satisfied.

2 things would make the ESN come up bad. Unpaid bill, and lost/reported stolen and was being processed by insurance.

The S4 has GSM and CDMA antennas, so yes it's possible. With a bad esn probably not at all though.

Thank you for the replies......so if my bad ESN s4 is unlocked through a 3rd party, it will not work, even though the sprint s4 is GSM and CDMA?

I don't know where you got that wrong info.
But the Galaxy S4 with Sprint is an international phone; it has both, CDMA & GSM antennas.
I know it for a fact since I have one! :thumbup:
