Talking To upgrade or not to upgrade?

I'm going to be eligibile for upgrade with Sprint in January and currently use an extremely dated blackberry 8330. I want to get a new(er) phone one way or another, but I'm unsure what to do and hope you wise people may be able to give me some good input.
Here are the basic options I'm considering. Option 1 would be to sign a new contract and get something really cool, likely an Evo or an Epic. Option 2 would be not to sign a contract and buy a used device such as an HTC Hero. I know the different devices are in quite different classes, but my belief(and I could be wrong) is that even a Hero is going to be a great deal better than my 8330 is currently.
Also of important note, the upgrade position I will be at is 1 year in to my 2 year contract. That means that not upgrading now would leave me in a position to be contract free and upgrade in November of 2011. I'm just really impatient and my blackberry is getting OLD.
    Thanks.

Unless you know of a phone you want that is being released soon I would say just upgrade. Otherwise there is always something better coming in a few months. I would go with the Evo or the Epic over the Hero because they are much better and you will be on a 1 year upgrade cycle then anyway due to Sprint premier member status you will have. The Evo shift 4G is being released in January which is what I am getting. I know by then I am sure there will be news of an Evo 2 being released a few months later or whatever with a dual core blah blah but I need a phone now and waiting 3 weeks is doable vs 6 months which would be halfway through an upgrade cycle on Sprint.

Most people say buy what you want when you want it otherwise you will go mad waiting for the next best thing that is ALWAYS coming out right around the corner.

Of course CES is in January and Sprint could make some huge announcement that may interest you so maybe a 2-3 week wait for CES would be good for you as well and if nothing catches your interest you could pick up the Evo or whatever then.
