Default CWM restore and back up

So I got a question about CWM for gingerbread....
When you back up your ROM along with it's aps and settings and all that other god stuff
Do you just install a new ROM straight from CWM through zip files over your current ROM or do you have to do a factory reset first?

Its always a good idea to at least wipe cache and dalvik cache when changing roms unless told otherwise by the cook.

Most of the ROMs for the Atrix require a full wipe prior to install for all scripts to work properly...like tethering and Gtalk over 3G. The ROM will say if you need to or not. FYI, clockwork recovery does not do a full wipe so if using clockwork(ROM Manager) you need to wipe with fastboot. If you are using Tenfar's recovery, that does a full wipe.
