i know the site and everything else says the datapro plan is required for use, but do you think i can just use my 2gb plan or stick with wifi for this to work?

The device needs NOTHING to work. It just connects to a current Motorola device over USB and MicroHDMi and outputs to the screen and inputs the touchpad and keyboard.

I use THIS ONE (The Atrix one) with my wife's Photon EVERY DAY.

It's just a screen extender running Firefox.
