Having Problems Rooting

Hi, I am new to the android world and am trying to root my captivate. I have renamed the zip file to update.zip, but when i restart using vol up/down and click reinstall packages, i get this message:

Install from sdcard
finding update package
opening update package
installing update
installation aborted

what could be the problem here?

i have hidden file extensions visible in windows so i don't think it's a renaming issue.

go to xda-developers and download the root app. It's a one click root. all you do is plug the phone into the pc (enable usb debugging), hit root and it roots the phone right then and there. takes 10 seconds.
