Thinking about rooting

I want to root my phone because im TIRED of waiting for 2.2, and i also want to get 2.3 within the next 3 years...
i know theres a way to now do a one click root thing on your phone. is that the suggested way?
also, what are some consequences? will my phone freeze? will it (im not even sure what this means, but i know its bad) brick? if i DO have problems with my phone can i un-root it? and if i need to get at&t involved, can the tell it was once rooted?

There was recently an app released called z4root that you can download from the market to very easily root your phone.
