I recommend Cognition as your first, possibly last, custom ROM for your Captivate. It is based off a Captivate load, and works very well. Has everything you mention and more.

    Default ROM Recommendations?

I read more about Cog than any other ROM, is this because it is overall the most user friendly? good speed, good signal, least bugs, nice interface? Or are the others like Phoenix and Perception just as good?

I haven't used Cognition, but I have used Perception and currently have Phoenix. I've also tried Darky and Serendipity. They're all about the same, since I swap in the speedmod kernel (for battery life) and use the Go Launcher for the appearance. I really liked Perception but wanted to try some others out. Phoenix Rising is working well also.

My advice would just be to try a few out and see how you like them.

Sweet deal, let the tweaking begin! Is swapping kernels easy? I've read it is just like flashing a rom

SGS Kernal Flash makes it the easiest thing I've ever done. It takes seconds to do it, and it's very easy to use. It's free in the market

Cognition gets recommended most often, IMO, because it is based off the 2.2 leak specifically for the Captivate. As such, there are fewer modem issues, button remaps and hacking in general going on. Check out the page views for the ROMs too. I know that doesn't mean anything... but Cog has WAY WAY WAY more people using it to ferret out the bugs. Of which there hasn't really been any in a release or two.

Most include much the same things, as stated above, but there are some small differences. For example, the ROMs based on i9000 froyo (Perception, Phoenix, Serendipity, etc) have some features that Cognition doesn't, and some bugs it doesn't.

Bluetooth microphone listening for dialing, is on i9000. Backlight notification as well (there is no LED on our phones I am sure you have noticed), with BLN, you can control the lighting of the capacitive buttons as a poor-mans LED (works nice). i9000 ROMs also enable HSUPA (high speed upload) which helps overall data speed. And so on.

Cognition has far fewer modem issues (data network loss, dropped voice calls, airplane mode toggling required, etc). There are only two modem files for it, and both work the same so far as I can tell. There are a great deal more modems for i9000, and that is NOT a good thing. That means they are not getting it right in my book, and keep needing to come out with new versions. The latest one JL3, was the cause of me going back to Cog for the last couple weeks.

I loaded up Perception just today, since they went back to the JK4 modem in 10.1 (Version 10 is where I had problems and left). So far so good, but the data drops were only a couple times a day, so more time needed to be sure.

But, I still say start with Cog as a new flasher. It is pretty much what the phone SHOULD have been out of the box.

Man, now THAT was some excellent feedback, thanks, I'll follow your advice....I guess starting with any ROM, finding what you don't like about it and moving to one that has the feature you wanted or doesn't have the bug you hate is the whole process of tweaking the phone to your liking! thanks again loraque

Excellent post by Loraque, I will add that I've only used the i9000 builds so I can't comment on anything different. But I've been using the JL2 modem for all the ROMs and haven't had any issues with calls or texts. Installing a different modem is also very easy using clockwork mod recovery

di11igaf's 3.01 rom is extremely good and fast too...extremely good battery life which is always a plus...i put on glitterball's kernal cuz i wanted the OC...also flashed the UGJK4 modem cuz its the most reliable and has hsupa enabled. My quadrant is 1800 which id say is pretty good! Links to each thread.

Default Recommendation on best 2.2 rom

So I bought a captivate off ebay to try, hack and just mess with in place of my iphone. I have no doubt that I want to hack the thing, but what comes in as the best 2.2 rom for stability and battery life, or just in general.

    Any recommendations?

    I would start here-

There are several good choices, but your chances of being happy are very high.

This is an older version of cognition that seems to run better. 3.02 kept making my email crash.

There's a fantastic new ROM based on the Armani SGS phone (which is identical to the Captivate) called Andromeda. It's official Froyo, it's fast, and incredibly stable check it out

I bought a captivate running 2.1 JH7 out of the box almost a month ago. I jumped ship from a Blackberry Bold 9700. So I am new to Androids. Very impressed. So when I found out that you could root them and install custom ROMS, I did my research on it. So after finding out that I could do a full factory restore in the event I needed to do a warranty exchange (as well as bought insurance on it) I decided I would give it a shot. I may be new to androids, but i am not new to flashing ROMS. My recommendation is to do your research first! Don't just jump into it. I decided to install Cognition, because it was designed specifically for the captivate, and its purpose is to provide stability with enhancements and more features/options. It does not focus on themes and other flashy options, which tends to reduce stability. What has been a great help along the way, are the video tuturials by mobiletechvideos. If you haven't seen them yet already, mobiletechvideos also does reviews on each custom ROM. So by watching these videos, that should help you decide what ROM to install.

di11igaf 5.5 is fantastic, it's no frills, just works.

Paragon is another that I really enjoyed, I just decided to try something else for a bit. 5.0 is coming out tonight sometime.

You won't be disappointed with either of these

    di11igaf -
