backup before rooting

i am doing research on whether or not to root my captivate when i get it. do you backup the phone before you root in case you need to get it back to stock? if so is there a good backup app? thanks

The usual process is to backup your apps using Titanium Backup (needs root), and restore them after you flash. The process to go back to stock is not so easy as just restoring a backup. Best bet is to watch the videos on this thread for the topics you are interested in-

Titanium backup covers your apps, but not the "operating system".

The usually recommended "OS" backup method is to use Rom Manager, but note that this does not backup the kernel. This means reinstalling your (e.g.) 2.1 rom-manager backup, over a (e.g.) 2.2 installed rom will likely have odd results, as the kernels will probably differ.

I *think* that the only way to make a complete phone dump is to use ODIN (or something similar), but I have never done this.
