ROMs:
Q: What is a ROM?
A: The ROM or OS is the image of the operating system. Example, Honeycomb, Gingerbread, Froyo, Eclair, Donut and Cupcake these are considered the ROM. The term ROM(s) is usually used in the rooting and hacking community when referring to a modified or custom version of the original ROM/OS.

Q: What's the difference between Captivate based and I9000 based?
A: Captivate based uses the official Froyo release. I9000 is the European Galaxy S, and is ported to the Captivate by the developer. I9000 based brings more up-to-date software, but may be more buggy.

Kernels:
Q: What is a kernel?
A: In simple terms, a kernel is the main link to the ROM (OS) and tells it what to do and how to do it. Aside from stock kernels, modified kernels are used for overclocking the speed of processor and controlling of voltage usage, resulting in better battery life and other settings.

Themes:
Q: What is a theme?
A: A theme is a makeover of the ROMs UI (user interface) by means of changing backgrounds, text colors, icons, overall appearance. This could also include battery display mods, and other neat additions.

Other Mods:
Q: What is other mods?
A: This could be modified stock ROM applications, startup & shutdown boot animations and application restores/reverts & other misc. changes that can be flashed or installed.

Not that I know of...you could just extract it from the ROM and flash it with SGS kernel flasher or Odin.

Everything up to date. Cleaned out some dead ROMs (I left the more popular Froyo ROMs) and added in Gingerbread stuff. If I missed anything, let me know.

BTW, if anyone runs across a ROM that doesn't have a thread, go ahead and make one. Just use the format me and ragnorakx use for them (including the location link, we'll get yelled at if we don't have it ).

what 1 of these roms would i use for samsung galaxy s at&t SHG-I897running off 3.4.5 gb rooted . and that would let me change boot up pic and shut down pic . any info would help thanx
