back button issue with captivate

When I first purchased the captivate the day after its release, I was having an issue with the phone returning to the home screen or the previous screen as if I touched the back button, when I did not touch the back button. I called AT&T and they updated the phone to a new firmware or something and the problem went away. I then heard about custom roms and loaded serendipity and a few others. All seem to have the same back button error I originally had. Is their a way to get rid of this issue with a custom rom? I surely do not want to go back to the updated stock operating system to get rid of the issue. I would like to stay with a custom rom. Has anyone else had a similar issue? How did you fix it? Thanks
