Default Captivate not sending MMS messages?

Ok. So I just got off a half hour conversation with AT&T and We cant figure out for the life of the phone, why MMS messages cannot be sent. Although, when they did send me a small AT&T logo I did receive it. And When I sent that to myself, it did send and I received it again. I then took out my SIM and put it in my BlackBerry 9700 and MMS sent find and received fine. Any size picture. I then took a picture with the camera on the Captive in Fine, Normal and Super Fine. And each picture I tried to send to myself. Each said Compressing picture and when I go to send it, it stays on sending.

That guy got so fed up he told me to Google it lol. So I did, and I see some others are having the same issue. Anyone else experiencing this?

AT&T couldn't fix either. Suggest trying sim in another phone.

Yes small pictures of low KB do work. And even a bigger picture that I took with the "Normal" mode on my camera worked to. But I could only actually worked when I went to my gallery, and sent the picture from there. Instead of snapping the pic, and sending straight from there. Seriously weird stuff man. When it sent, it was extremely slow to. Took like 10 minutes for me to receive it back after being sent.

Do you have another AT&T phone you could use to test MMS? That could pinpoint if it is the device or carrier issue.

I do. I tested it on the Bold 9700 and it was fine. I then went back on here and did it and it just takes an extremely long time to send an MMS compared to the Bold.

I can confirm that Captivate MMS sending does not work properly on Edge. It has no problems on 3G. Even had a new SIM installed. Same results. ATT cannot fix. Anyone else have this problem?

Hmm. Come to think of it, when I was in 3G it DID work. And it wasnt working with Edge. Good point. How can this be? Now THAT isnt right if that was to be the truth.

I live in an Edge area, so I continually have this problem. MMS is only working in 3G for me.

You can use Handcent to resize your pics you send as MMS

I wonder if this isnt a side effect/bug from att removing the ability to turn off 3g...

If I use Handcent for messaging it does the same thing. Matter of fact Handcent crashes when sending an MMS. If you restart it, Handcent shows it is still trying to send the MMS message. It said something about a log when it crashed, but I'm not sure how to extract it. A thing of interest though is the Groups entries on Gmail show up in Handcent while they don't in the pre-installed Messaging app. Clearly the Messaging app on the Captivate has issues, but I'm not sure if the MMS on the Edge Network is really one of them. This could be something else.

Hmm, Handcent crashed, but later I actually got the MMS messages. 65K picture file received.

That was 3.2.3 that I tried. Figured out the log and emailed the developer with the crash report.

One thing I hadn't tried before was to send a contact. This worked on Edge with the default Messaging app. I was very surprised.

I tried sending an MMS to my other phone today and it was stuck at "Sending" for about an hour. It finally got sent, but I'm guessing it got stuck when I was on the edge network. When I hit 3G coverage I got the message.

I dont understand this seriously. On my Bold 9700, my House there is Edge and I never had a problem sending over edge with MMS on the Bold. Now with this Captivate, It wont send an MMS while on Edge. This is extremely frustrating. You shouldnt have to do anything to resize a pic because internally, the Captivate actually resizes the picture and puts it under the 300kb limit. Hmm....

Terrigno- did I understand you correctly that regardless of Edge or 3G IF you send from Gallery it works?

If so- this is a device issue- Samsung must have the compression setting only in the Gallery app and not in the camera app. I've noticed similar (not same) issues with EVO- despite the menu option to send something as an attachment from multiple apps- it only works reliably from one app and not the other. (EVO had an issue when sending a vcard - it depends if you do it from the contact list vs. from the messaging app and select "attach"

There's too many ways to go about something in android- and I fear not all methods are being properly tested/QC'd on each handset/UI Skin ie: Sense vs. Touchwiz.

Handcent upgraded to 3.2.4. This great app is now working on the Captivate. 3.2.3 was a broken version. If you set MMS sending size to 100K, picture messaging works on the Edge Network. Any other setting does not work.

The original Messaging client shows that the picture is too large and compresses it. But I think it does not compress it to a small enough size to work on Edge. I believe this is an issue with the software itself. If it had an adjustment to outbound MMS size like Handcent has, it would probably work fine on Edge.

Default Yes, we have a problem

I spent two hours on the phone with AT&T and they tried EVERYTHING. I even went to the store and replaced my sim card. No Dice. They have no clue what the problem is. Just like posted above, with very small messages <100Kb, I can send MMS, everything else just HANGS forever then eventually fails. I installed handcent and changed the MMS max sending size to 100KBs and now it works. Someone call QA and get this shiet fix. Is this a Captivate or Android specific problem??

Mrgoodwords. What do you mean? Use Handcent and that takes care of the MMS problem?

I installed Handcent then in the Handcent settings limited the size of MMS to 100KB's. The app then resizes the pics to meet the <100KB setting and will send the MMS on the Edge network. Unfortunately, a picture <100KB has pretty poor resolution but at least it works. When on 3G, you can change the settings for a bigger size. Of course, this only works for those having problems sending MMS on Edge network and not on 3G.

Does that help? Either way, this is an issue...

Yep, this is a problem with the installed messenger app on the Captivate only if you are in an Edge network. 3G customers are not affected. After using Handcent for a while now. I like it better now anyway. I miss the puzzle piece thing on the lock screen, but its cool when handcent pops up and lets me type a quick reply. I have had some instances where the picture message would still not send though on some photos. Reducing the camera shot to 2M setting seems to have that solved for now. It sucks to live in an Edge area.
