Andorid Market version 1714 won't update

My android market is version 1714 and won't update. I tried going to applications manager and clearing the cache but that did not help. There is no clear data tab on the market app. Is there anything I can do to make it update? I just bought my wife a captivate a week ago (3 months after I got mine) and hers updated within a couple of days.

What exactly happens when you try to update? Does it begin the download, complete the download but not install, etc?

Besides the market cache, you can try clearing the download manager cache as well.
