No contract pricing question...
I was on contract with at&T and bought the Note 2 off contract... does doing that now take me off contract?

Correct. Not sure why op would think it makes no sense. You are under contract for the original phone you bought at the subsidized price regardless of new device. Only way to get rid of contract would be to terminate, pay prorated ETF thenbuy at full retail/establish new account.
