4g LTE, 4g, 3g, Southern NJ-Philly area speeds & connections

My signal is all over the place..... One minute 4G LTE, next 3G, and then 4g HSPA+? I know AT&T stinks, but I just wanted to make sure it's my area and not my phone. Is there a setting I could check to make sure it's correct?
I called AT&T to make sure I was on the 4G LTE plan.

speeds are 2-7mbps down and 1-2mbps up.

Edit: After reading several posts here and on XDA, the phone just grabs the strongest signal at the time...it seems.

But, still curious about other's speeds in the relative area?

I live in south Jersey, and have never seen my phone go into 3g, always lte or hspa, and I live almost right in between philly and AC... As I get closer to philly it goes to 4gLte... I had Verizon for almost 5 years before this phone, and this is the best service I've ever seen around my place
