I read on The Verge that the AT&T Note has the hardware but its carrier disabled.Silly phone pirates. Oh wait. That might be NFC. Nevermind

Yes, supposedly the hardware is NFC capable, just not activated.
Some older devices had RFID capabilities installed, but most were through a dongle or attachable accessory. - 06-14-2012, 04:53 AM #4

You can enable NFC if you're rooted. On all custom roms, its enabled, on ICS its enabled or if you want an add-on, thats available too.

I see it under the wifi menu in CyanogenMod 9.
