Factory Data Reset for Performance improvement

My phone is starting to get sluggish if I do a factory data reset can I expect increase in performance? The phone is over a year old

Sometimes. I definitely noticed better performance when I reset mine. I would clear just the cache first (boot into recovery and select clear cache) and see if that helps you out. That can help sometimes. Also go to settings, developer options, and turn all of the animations off as well as the various transition stuff. It makes the phone feel ALOT faster this way.

I can't seem to get the phone to boot into recovery mode I have tried holding the power, volume and home button simultaneously (att sgh i717 no physical home button) it just reboots normally

You need to hold the Power+Vol Up+Vol Down to get the Recovery options since there is no physical home button.
