Free text messages WITHOUT 3RD PARTY APP?

Hi all. New to Android.
Text messages are free from iPhone to iPhone. Without using a 3rd party app, is there a way to send/receive free text messages to/from my Android phone to anyone else?

No, you'll have to use a third party app and set up a service with that app. It could be possible that you setup sms service with the third party company and use the stock app, but I highly doubt it.

These free messages you speak of are probably imessages. Similar to wifi hangout messages, they are free because a data signal was used, not a cellular signal. So,i would recommend hangouts.

Hangouts is more of a service. Other users will need to have it installed if you plan on using the hangout feature. Otherwise it'll be used just as a third party sms app.
