Replace stock gmail.apk w/o root?

Hey guys, I dont know if this is possible, but I wanted to see what you all thought. I am totally fine with the stock rom right now. The only thing that bothers me is that I cannot invert the colors on the gmail app. I have found a replacement apk that does this, but I am unable to get rid of the default gmail.apk in order to replace it. I know I'd be able to do it by rooting but I wondered if there was some other way where I could avoid root for just this one thing. Maybe possible via adb w/o root?

No. I'm pretty sure you must have an unsecure kernel to use adb. Which means you need to be rooted for adb.
