Define "terrible." And define your phone usage. Is this a new problem, or has the phone always been this way? Did you recently install an OS update? Are you using any task killers or "battery saver" type apps, or do you manually kill apps you're not using?

Do some screen captures so we can see your usage and battery life. Go to Settings / Battery, and do a screen capture. Tap on the graph, and do a screen capture of that screen. Back up, tap Display, and do another screen capture. Post all three here.

I read that thread till my eyes hurt. If the answer is to drop LTE, I'm getting a different phone. I got my phone on release day. My battery was fine until a few days ago. Now it lasts 4 hours at idle. Not the battery. I have two and they behave the same. Some days it's K9 mail topping the usage list, sometimes media server, sometimes android OS, sometimes cell standby... I'm going to call ATT and see if they have a signal issue they are willing to admit to, try a factory reset, then a different phone.

If your an Microsoft Exchange user, disable push, and do 15 minute refresh. That took mine from about a 12 hour battery to about a 1.5 day battery.

Four hours at idle indicates something very wrong. Even leaving LTE on when there's no signal won't drain the battery that fast, unless you've to the issue identified in the plummet thread. Have to tried rebooting the phone?

Which issue identified in the plummet thread? Rebooting, pulling the battery, etc, makes no difference.

I say biggest things are screen brightness, strength of signal, running apps in background, stuff like that can help or hurt your battery life.

LOL! Sorry but this is what the majority of people asked for. Asking for all these features didn't dawn on you all that it would effect the battery? If you want a perfect phone......join the club. You must be willing to sacrifice to get what you want and in yalls case you sacrificed battery life. Deal with it or jump to a better device that ACTUALLY suites your wants and needs. Not have the device to say you have the supposed best.

Using the snapdragon battery guru app helps after a few days after installing it... Also go to gorilla gadget. Com and get the extended battery for it. At bedtime im usually at 30-50% battery after 18 hours of use. It makes the phone fatter but its worth it if you use your phone alot

What else can I tell you? A week ago the phone was fine, ending the day at 50% consistently, then suddenly it dies in 4 hours. There is no pattern to the battery stats under settings, and they make sense relative to usage. A lot of calls will have that topping the chart, a lot of emails puts K9 right below screen, etc. There is no "plummet" effect. Just a steady and very rapid drain. I have two batteries and they both behave the same.

Can't believe the number of times I've written this recently. There is NO WAY WE CAN HELP WITHOUT DATA! I can't tell what your phone is doing from a thousand miles away.

At least post some screen shots of the battery page and sub pages so we have something to work with.

Posts that say 'my battery life sucks - how do I fix it' are like calling a doctor and saying 'I don't feel good, give me some medicine.'

I assume you recently got the 4.1.2 update. My wife had a similar issue with hers. What I found out by looking at battery stats seemed like the android system and android os were keeping the phone from sleeping. That usually means a app is constantly running. On her phone it was the All Share Cast Dongle Update. Her update for some reason did not prompt me to update. Once I clicked on that app, it said an updates version is needed. It then downloaded and updated the app. I t is a Samsung app that did not go through the Play Store. All Share Cast does, but this update app they put there runs separately. So try and see if you have the All Share Cast Dongle S/W Update and open it. If it prompts you for an update, this is probably your issue. After updating and manually restarting the phone and charging, her battery use went back to normal.

I had that issue recently over two days. Found an app was constantly running in the background, and eating up data. I restricted the app from running in the background unless on Wi-Fi and it stopped.
Try that feature on one or two apps at a time to narrow it down, then restrict the offending app(s).
Go to <settings>, <mobile data>, and scroll to the app in question, select it and scroll to the bottom. Check the <restrict> box.

On it, thanks. I found that battery usage flatlines when I turn off mobile data, so something is eating it up.

Edit: It was K9 mail. Had to uninstall and re-install it a few times but I got it happy. I had suspected it earlier but re-installing it then did not fix the issue. Thanks again.

I upgraded to 4.1.1 and experienced the battery life drop out from 100 to 50 within minutes, and I had Juice Defender enabled. I also experienced my phone getting hot even when not in use.

What has worked now for about a week and another methods working is this (for me at least):
1. Disable all battery saving apps right now. Clear your RAM, active apps, etc.
2. Remove your battery for about 10-15 minutes, until it cools. Then reinstall and activate your phone.
3. Download MobileCare.
--Clean up phone through that app.
--Activate its battery saver options. Use ONLY that one.
--Set task killer to once an hour.

I've had 16-18 hours of battery life. Now I think due to some issue with the hardware or Jelly Bean, the phone has been reverting to its heating/draining ways. Repeat the simple process, and get the life again. My phone's temp is around 70 degrees (that's cool) usually. I keep data off unless I need it, but typically use Wi-Fi mostly.

It's weird and it takes some small work, but its worked.

Next step: Disable Mobile Care's battery saver. You probably had some cache or file corruption after the update that was causing the problem, and Mobile Care cleaned that up. You don't need a battery saver app on the S3. They're likely to do more harm than good.

If the problem keeps recurring, then you probably have a corrupt app (possibly even a factory app) that's causing the cache to be corrupted. A factory reset will almost certainly fix it once and for all. But before taking that step, you should try to figure out what app is actually draining the battery.
