Steps on how to switch between roms?

So I have CyanogenMod 10.1 right now on my phone. I want to try out another ROM like AOKP but then I want to switch back to CM. Do I just backup my CM, flash AOKP, then gapps? I don't know when to wipe the cache too. Please help.

Boot into CWM recovery, make a backup, flash AOKP and GApps, wipe the cache, and reboot. Then, when you want CM back, just reboot into recovery and restore the backup.

I have twrp or something like that. Do I just do the same? And do I have to wipe cache when I want to go back to CM?

I don't use TWRP recovery, but I'd assume it'd be something similar. And it's recommended to wipe cache's between all ROM installs.
