really strange.. phone only charges with nook cable.

everything else i've tried (OEM samsung cable, 3 other non-branded cables) do not work.. anybody know why this happens?

It seems probable your micro USB port is damaged, and the alignment of pins on the Nook cable is slightly different enough to touch the contacts correctly. Some people have been successful in making minor tweaks to the USB contacts using a pin or needle. You may wish to try that if you feel adept at repairs. Ask around the Galaxy Nexus forums for advice on how to fix the port. Lots of those folks have done it.
