Returning HTC One go phone

My HTC one broke and I heard that people with a faulty phone called ATT and had them replace it without going through the HTC warranty. Am I able to do this if i'm on the GO Phone plan?

How did it break? If it's a defect then you can warranty exchange it out. If you dropped it and the screen cracked then you would have to go through insurance.

The motherboard went out. I was very happy with this phone but now I'm not so sure, this sort of thing shouldn't happen in a phone less than a year old.
