Perhaps someone else has mentioned this but I just realized that attachments can be saved from the stock app by a tap and hold within the text window before you actually tap the attachment. Before the bundled update one would get a slideshow from which attachments could be saved once the slideshow was started. That option is gone.
Tap and hold within the original text window and then select save attachment.
The worst thing about sms/mms is that attachments get saved directly into dialer storage with everything else (textwise). You have to save the attachment as mentioned above and then delete the original message to prevent the dialer storage (which resides in your internal memory) from bloating.
