    Default Overseas Use

I want to use my Inspire 4g in Costa Rica. It is not rooted and I did not get the world traveller package. i had assumed it would just work being as how it is a quad band world phone. It does not log onto the network down here. I do not want data, just phone. Do you need to buy the world traveller from ATT for this feature? In the past I have used a Motorola Razr and LG Shine, both from ATT down here. I did have the world traveller package then. I just thought I would pay a little extra now. What gives?

i took my old blackberry 9700 to UK recently but it wouldn't connect to the cell tower. i just replaced the SIM with the local sim and got a pre-paid service and work perfectly.

Default You don't need to "buy" World Traveler but you MUST have International Roaming

You're right: since the Inspire 4G includes the GSM 1800 band, then it can function for voice (phone) in Costa Rico. BUT......................

You won't be able to use it unless you have requested AT&T to allow International Roaming on your phone account.

You don't HAVE to "buy" AT&T Word Traveler; that $3.99/month fee simply means you pay less for voice minutes than you would if you didn't have it.

Per the AT&T website: their rate is $2.89 per voice minute without World Traveler and $1.99 per minute if you pay the $3.99/month for World Traveler.

(Obviously, the phone won't work with a local Costa Rica SIM card unless it's unlocked. Since you mentioned your phone is not rooted and since AT&T won't unlock Inspire 4G's until sometime in August, then I assume it's not unlocked unless you purchased an unlock code from an interent site.)

    Cheers.

Are you saying that rooting the phone will also unlock it for use with other company SIMs?
Android user since the very first T-Mobile G1...

Oops....thanks for bringing that up, ReuvenNY. The last part I wrote (in the parentheses) wasn't correct. I had thought that there were some ROMs available which also unlocked the phone but this is apparently not the case.

The other info about International Roaming still applies re the Thread Author's question.

From what I have read over at XDA, rooting with s-off does sim unlock the phone.
